Soquel High School’s water polo standout, Rafael Suarez-Abraham, has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) for the 2025 season. This recognition is particularly notable as it is uncommon for a goalie to receive such an accolade, given the spotlight often shines on high-scoring attackers.
Suarez-Abraham, a 6-foot-4 junior, has made a significant impact on the field this season. With a remarkable average of 8.5 saves per match, he secured the Knights a league title and helped them qualify for the CCS Open Division playoffs. His performance has drawn high praise from his coach, Ryan Chapatte, who was also honored as the SCCAL Coach of the Year.
Outstanding Performance and Team Success
The Knights finished the season with an impressive record of 23-6 overall and 4-0 within the league. Suarez-Abraham played a crucial role in their success, stopping a total of 238 shots throughout the season while maintaining an 8.5 goals-against average. His ability to perform under pressure was evident in key matches against top teams like Sacred Heart Prep and Campolindo, where he made pivotal saves, including stopping two penalty shots against Sacred Heart.
Chapatte emphasized the unique talent Suarez-Abraham brings to the game, stating, “He doesn’t sit back; he attacks. He blocks the shots he’s supposed to and a lot he shouldn’t.” This fearless approach has made him a formidable presence in the league.
Recognition of Talent Across the League
In addition to Suarez-Abraham’s accolades, his brother, Gabe Suarez-Abraham, was also recognized with a first-team selection, alongside senior utility player Stryder Stelck. Stelck led the Knights with 81 goals and contributed significantly with 27 assists and 28 steals. The Suarez-Abraham brothers have been playing water polo since they were young, highlighting their deep commitment to the sport.
The SCCAL has also recognized players from other schools. Santa Cruz saw three players named to the first team, including senior attacker Hayden Johnson, who led the Cardinals with 95 goals, and junior goalie Laird Bowser, who averaged 7.3 saves per game.
The full list of honors reflects the competitive nature of the SCCAL, showcasing the talent present across multiple teams. The first-team selections include:
