John Paul Kirk, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on December 9, 2025. Surrounded by family, including his wife of 73 years, Alice Kirk, John leaves behind a legacy of service, adventure, and deep familial love.
Born on March 14, 1931, in Ashland, Alabama, John was the youngest of ten siblings. He maintained strong connections with his family throughout his life, often returning to his hometown. After graduating from Clay County High School in 1949, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, now known as the Air Force. During his service, he was stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base, where he taught aircraft electronics. It was here that he met Alice, and the couple married on December 27, 1952.
Following their marriage, John and Alice had three children: John Jr., Kathy, and Rebecca. Their family expanded to include ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another grandchild expected in January 2026. John’s commitment to education was evident when he returned to college later in life, earning a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddle University at the age of 76.
John’s passion for flying began in Texas, where he took lessons, ultimately receiving his pilot’s license. He held this license for fifty years, during which he also earned an instrument rating, a multiengine rating, and a commercial rating. He shared this love for aviation with Alice, taking her on her first flight.
The couple’s adventurous spirit led them to work in Bogotá, Colombia, for several years, forging lifelong friendships. Upon returning to the United States, they settled in Torrance, California, where John embarked on a successful career in financial planning. He founded his own investment and planning firm, retiring after more than fifty years in the industry.
John’s dedication to community service was profound. He served as president of the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club and was actively involved in various organizations, including Toastmasters International and The Arc South Bay. His leadership extended to the Torrance YMCA and the South Bay Association of Chambers of Commerce. John was also a lifetime member and secretary of the Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce.
A devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach since 1961, John was instrumental in establishing the church’s endowment fund, showcasing his commitment to both faith and community.
John Kirk is survived by his wife, Alice, their children, and an extensive family network, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 10, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church located at 243 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277.
The community remembers John not only for his numerous accomplishments but for his genuine warmth and generosity. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him.
