WADENA, Minnesota — The historic Cozy Theatre, a cornerstone of community entertainment for over a century, is undergoing significant changes to ensure its survival. Dave Quincer, the current owner and a member of the family that has operated the theater since 1914, is adapting the beloved one-screen cinema to meet modern demands while preparing the next generation to continue the legacy.
Dave Quincer’s journey at the Cozy Theatre began at the young age of seven when he started sweeping floors to be close to his father. By the time he reached 13, he had taken on the role of projectionist. Now approaching 60, Dave has seen the theater evolve from its original single screen to a three-screen facility, all equipped with digital technology.
The Cozy Theatre first opened its doors at the dawn of the motion picture industry. Over the years, it has been remodeled to incorporate new technology. In the late 1930s, owner Clarence Quincer gained notoriety for his bravery when he attempted to apprehend two burglars who had taken refuge in the theater after a police chase. His efforts, however, were thwarted by a winter storm that obscured the burglars’ escape route.
By the 1980s, the theater transitioned to its third generation under Adella Quincer, who managed the cinema for 45 years. She reminisced about the early days of film, recalling how live music accompanied silent films before the introduction of “talkies.” The first sound film shown at the Cozy Theatre was “The Singing Fool” featuring Al Jolson, marking a significant technological advancement with the installation of the Photophone system in 1929.
Historically, theaters served as community hubs, hosting not only films but also medicine shows, plays, and town meetings. To keep up with changing entertainment preferences, Dave Quincer has invested in renovations, adding digital screens and 3D capabilities to attract a new audience. The theater now boasts heated recliners, a balcony seating area, and an updated phone messaging system detailing showtimes and amenities.
In recognition of its quality and community support, the Cozy Theatre was named the top movie theater in Minnesota in 2013 after winning a competition hosted by WCCO-TV. Reflecting on this achievement, Dave expressed his passion for the theater, stating, “The satisfaction of my job comes from the people who come through the door every night. I know that the community and surrounding areas appreciate the theater, and we appreciate them just as much.”
The story of the Quincer family and the Cozy Theatre is increasingly rare in Minnesota’s cinema landscape. According to Cinema Treasures, there are currently 151 active movie theaters in the state, with only 70 being rural one-screen cinemas. At the height of the industry, Minnesota boasted 736 theaters, but approximately 80% have closed in recent years, with 480 of those being one-screen venues.
As the Cozy Theatre continues to navigate the challenges of the modern entertainment landscape, the Quincer family’s commitment to providing quality cinema experiences remains steadfast. With their history and adaptability, they aim to keep the spirit of the Cozy Theatre alive for future generations.
