URGENT UPDATE: Howard County has just announced its New Year’s service schedule and closures, impacting residents as they celebrate the arrival of January 1, 2024. Various county facilities will close for the holiday, including government offices, community centers, and local courts.
As the community gears up for festivities, essential services will remain operational. The 9-1-1 Center, along with Police and Fire departments, will continue to serve the public without interruption. Residents are reminded to dial 9-1-1 in emergencies and 410-313-2200 for non-urgent inquiries.
On New Year’s Day, waste collection services will be suspended, following the “slide” system—Thursday’s pickups will shift to Friday, and Friday’s to Saturday. Meanwhile, parks will remain open but will not be staffed. County operations will resume on January 2, recognized as an Energy Saving Day, emphasizing the county’s commitment to resource efficiency.
For those planning to celebrate on December 31, early closures are in place for community facilities. The Gary J. Arthur, North Laurel, and Roger Carter Community Centers, alongside the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center, will close at 5:00 p.m. The Baltimore & Ohio Ellicott City Station Museum will close even earlier, at 3:00 p.m.
Public transportation will also be affected, as the Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) buses will not operate on New Year’s Day. For RTA schedule inquiries or assistance, residents can call 1-800-270-9553 or visit their website.
Moreover, parking fees will not be enforced on January 1, giving residents one less concern during the holiday.
Officials urge everyone to plan accordingly as these changes come into effect. Stay informed and celebrate safely this New Year!
