James (Jim) Gordon Sheehy, a respected Navy veteran and accomplished aerospace engineer, died peacefully surrounded by family on November 16, 2025, in Redondo Beach, California, at the age of 84. His passing marks the end of a life devoted to service, family, and exploration.
Born in Windsor, New York, on March 9, 1941, Jim was the son of James Edward Sheehy and Shirley Baldwin Sheehy. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Alexis, their children, James and Shannon, grandson Matthew, and brother Dennis. He was preceded in death by his siblings Terry, Paul, Annine, Brian, Susan, and Burchard.
A Distinguished Naval and Engineering Career
Jim served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1966, achieving the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician. His service included deployments aboard the USS Lawrence, USS Chicago, USS Ramsey, USS Columbus, and USS Talbot. This period instilled in him a lifelong commitment to discipline and duty.
After his military service, Jim embarked on a notable career as an aerospace engineer. He contributed significantly to projects at Burroughs Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Honeywell, and Northrop. Among his most recognized work were the Viking Mars spacecraft and the MX ICBM Missile programs, earning him a reputation for technical expertise within the industry.
In addition to his professional achievements, Jim dedicated sixteen years to Rotary International, embracing its mission of service and community engagement. He was also a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous, celebrating an impressive 38 years of continuous sobriety in September 2025. His journey in AA exemplified the core principles of Recovery, Unity, and Service.
A Life of Adventure and Resilience
Traveling was a passion for Jim, and he explored all seven continents, visiting 103 countries and more than 500 cities with his wife, Alexis. Their adventures took them to diverse cultures, reflecting Jim’s curiosity and desire for new experiences.
Challenges arose when Jim developed a serious back condition in 2012. Rather than allow this to limit his life, he adapted by using a walker, which enabled him to continue his travels and engage in everyday activities. In a remarkable achievement, he completed the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon using a “sport walker,” followed by four additional marathons.
Jim Sheehy will be remembered for his intelligence, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family. His life was characterized by a deep love for his loved ones, a commitment to service, and a thirst for adventure. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience and inspiration, and he will be missed profoundly by all who knew him.
