Byron Lineman Brevin Brakke Commits to Southwest Minnesota State

Brevin Brakke, a senior lineman at Byron High School, has announced his commitment to play college football at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) in Marshall. Known for his exceptional performance on both the offensive and defensive lines, Brakke’s decision comes after a standout season in which he played a key role for the Bears.

During the 2025 season, Brakke contributed significantly to a Byron team that finished with a record of 9-1 and advanced to the Section 1, Class 4A championship game. The Bears’ defense was particularly impressive, allowing only 13.2 points per game, ranking as the seventh-best in the state among Class 4A teams. His efforts earned him recognition as the Skyway District Defensive Lineman of the Year and a spot on the Post Bulletin All-Area First Team.

Brakke’s Journey and Commitment

Brakke made his commitment public through a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “I’m excited to announce my commitment to play football at Southwest Minnesota State University! I’m incredibly grateful to my family, coaches, and teammates for their constant support throughout this journey. I can’t wait to get to work and represent SMSU at the next level.”

His head coach, Ben Halder, praised Brakke’s strength, agility, and quickness, highlighting his ability to anchor the Bears’ defensive line. Brakke stood out as a formidable force throughout the season, paving the way for star running back Carson Heimer, who rushed for over 1,300 yards and scored 18 touchdowns in just seven games.

Before finalizing his decision, Brakke received offers from several institutions, including Bethel University and Gustavus Adolphus College. Ultimately, he chose Southwest Minnesota State, where he will reunite with former Byron teammates Ben Steele and Gabe Coshenet. Steele committed to SMSU in mid-July, while Coshenet made his commitment in late November.

The Future Ahead

As Brakke prepares for this new chapter, he reflects on the support he received from his family, coaches, and teammates during his high school career. His commitment to SMSU not only marks a personal achievement but also continues the legacy of strong athletes emerging from Byron High School’s football program.

With his impressive skills and determination, Brevin Brakke is poised to make an impact at the collegiate level, representing SMSU as he embarks on the next phase of his football journey.
