The Salvation Army’s Southwest Division is facing a significant challenge as it approaches the conclusion of its annual Red Kettle holiday campaign in Arizona. Currently, the organization is **$775,000 short** of its ambitious **$2.3 million fundraising goal**. With the campaign set to end on **December 24, 2023**, officials are urging community members to contribute before the deadline.
As the campaign enters its final days, volunteers like **Carl Shelton** are stepping up to help close the funding gap. Shelton, a polio survivor, has dedicated the past four years to serving as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. Stationed outside a **Fry’s Food Store** in **Surprise, Arizona**, he stands out in a Santa Claus costume, complemented by a decorated wheelchair adorned with Christmas lights and festive music.
Scott Johnson, the division’s public relations director, expressed optimism despite the current shortfall. “The people of Arizona are very generous,” Johnson stated. “We’re hopeful we can make up that deficit here in the next few days.”
Shelton’s commitment to the cause stems from a desire to give back to the community that supported him during his childhood. Having faced challenges due to polio, he did not have the opportunity to serve in the military but finds purpose in his volunteer work. “I hear all kinds of stories about how the Salvation Army helped them back in their earlier days,” Shelton reflected. “It makes you warm knowing that this is all going to help somebody that’s in need.”
In addition to collecting donations, Shelton shares joy with children by handing out candy canes to those who contribute to his red kettle. “The smiles you get from the kids, man, it’s worth it 100%,” he said.
Red kettles will remain available at various storefronts until Wednesday, December 20, and donors can also contribute through the Salvation Army’s online platforms. As the campaign nears its conclusion, the urgency for donations becomes increasingly clear. Community support is vital to achieving the fundraising goal that will aid countless individuals and families in need this holiday season.
