UPDATE: A man was shot and killed by police in Queens early this morning after he allegedly charged at officers with a box cutter. The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21, 2023, at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway.
According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, officers from the 101st Precinct were dispatched following a 911 call reporting a domestic altercation between a father and his son. Upon arrival, officers met the parents and entered the apartment to locate the 29-year-old son, who was not initially found.
As officers and the parents exited the apartment, the son was spotted in the hallway wielding a box cutter. Chief Rivera stated, “The officers gave multiple verbal commands to the male to drop the weapon as they attempted to deescalate the situation, but he did not comply.”
In a sudden escalation, the father retreated behind the officers as the son charged at them with the weapon. While one officer deployed a Taser, another discharged their firearm, striking the man. Emergency medical services arrived and transported him to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The officers involved were evaluated at a local hospital and reported no injuries. Chief Rivera emphasized the unpredictable nature of police work, stating, “This incident once again demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day and how a routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation.”
The NYPD Force Investigation Division is currently investigating the shooting, with further updates expected as the inquiry unfolds. This tragic event highlights the ongoing challenges and risks faced by law enforcement in the line of duty.
