UPDATE: Authorities have identified the man shot during a police confrontation in South San Francisco as 28-year-old Luis Francisco-Manzo. This incident occurred on December 8, 2023, and is currently under investigation by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
In a shocking turn of events, police were summoned to the 900 block of Sandra Court around 5:10 a.m. by Francisco-Manzo’s mother, who reported that her son had taken drugs and was expressing suicidal thoughts. Upon arrival, officers discovered that he was armed with a knife, escalating the situation rapidly.
Body-worn camera footage shows Francisco-Manzo initially complying with officers’ commands to approach them. However, the situation took a dangerous turn when he brandished the knife upon reaching the officers. Police ordered him to drop the weapon, but when he failed to comply, they deployed Tasers, which proved ineffective.
As the confrontation intensified, Francisco-Manzo moved towards the officers with the knife raised. In response, Officer Brendan Hart and Officer Martin Corona fired their weapons, striking him. He collapsed immediately, and officers rendered medical aid until firefighters arrived to transport him to a local hospital. Initially, he was listed in critical condition but is now recovering.
Police have confirmed the experience levels of the officers involved—Hart has been with the department for eight years, while Corona has served for four-and-a-half years. Footage from the incident has been released to provide transparency as the investigation unfolds.
