A crowdfunding campaign for Ahmed Al Ahmed, recognized as a hero for his courageous actions during a mass shooting in Bondi Beach, has raised over $2.5 million. The funds have come from nearly 43,000 individual donations, including a significant contribution of $99,999 from American billionaire Bill Ackman. Al Ahmed’s quick thinking and bravery during the incident on December 10, 2023, where he wrestled a firearm from one of the attackers, has inspired widespread admiration and support.
The GoFundMe page dedicated to Al Ahmed highlights his selfless actions amid chaos, stating, “His actions were selfless, instinctive, and undeniably heroic, taken without regard for his own safety.” Reports indicate that he was shot twice while intervening to protect others. As of now, total donations for verified fundraisers related to the Bondi shooting victims and their families have approached $5 million.
Among those deeply affected by the tragedy is the family of Matilda, a ten-year-old victim, for whom nearly $780,000 has been raised. Matilda was the youngest of the 15 victims who lost their lives that evening. A fundraiser for Sofia and Boris Gurman, both shot while attempting to thwart the attack, has gathered $650,000. Additionally, over $360,000 has been collected for the family of Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who was also killed.
The incident unfolded as over 1,000 people gathered at Bondi Beach to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah, when Sajid Akram, aged 50, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, opened fire on the crowd shortly before 19:00. Al Ahmed, a 42-year-old shop owner originally from Syria, was hospitalized following the incident and is receiving treatment for his injuries.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns visited Al Ahmed during his recovery, expressing gratitude for his bravery. Minns posted on social media, calling Al Ahmed a “real-life hero” and emphasizing that his actions likely saved numerous lives. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also met with Al Ahmed, describing him as a “true Australian hero.”
Al Ahmed’s heroism is expected to be recognized with a bravery award from Governor-General Sam Mostyn. Mostyn stated, “It would be staggering that he wouldn’t be receiving some form of bravery award,” highlighting the significance of Al Ahmed’s actions.
In a heartfelt message from his hospital bed, Al Ahmed expressed appreciation for the support he has received, saying in Arabic, “May Allah reward you and grant wellbeing.” He acknowledged the severity of his injuries but maintained that he does not regret his actions during the attack.
Reports from Al Ahmed’s migration lawyer, Sam Issa, reveal that he sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including severe damage to his left arm. Issa described Al Ahmed as “struggling” but noted that he remains humble and focused on his recovery rather than seeking attention.
As the community continues to rally around Al Ahmed and the victims, the fundraising efforts reflect a collective desire to support those affected by this tragic event, underscoring the spirit of resilience and compassion during difficult times.
