Philadelphia Ballet Enchants Audiences with “The Nutcracker”

The Philadelphia Ballet is captivating audiences this holiday season with performances of George Balanchine’s classic ballet, “The Nutcracker,” which runs until December 31 at the Academy of Music. This beloved production has become a cherished holiday tradition in the city, drawing families and ballet enthusiasts alike.

Artistic Director Angel Corella describes “The Nutcracker” as “a beautiful fairy tale” that embodies the spirit of the festive season. Corella emphasizes the joy of presenting this classic piece, stating, “It’s really, really Christmassy. We love doing it.” The production features approximately 80 dancers, including both professional company members and students from the Philadelphia Ballet School, who begin rehearsals about a month before the performances.

The story unfolds at a Christmas party where a young girl named Marie receives a magical nutcracker from her Uncle Drosselmeyer. After her brother, Fritz, accidentally breaks the nutcracker, Marie is devastated, but her uncle repairs it, leading her to a fantastical dream. In her dream, she encounters an enormous world filled with mice, and the Nutcracker comes to life to defend her against the Mouse King.

Corella notes that the first act prominently features children, showcasing their growth and development as dancers. “The first act mainly is the kids,” he explains. “And how they grow into being principal dancers or doing the principal part, it’s quite rewarding.” The enchanting scenes include a beautifully snow-covered forest, widely regarded as one of the most memorable moments in the ballet.

As the narrative progresses, Marie and the Nutcracker journey to the Land of Sweets, where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, who perform in honor of their guests. The second act highlights the professional company dancers, representing various countries through the characters of candy, all set to Tchaikovsky’s iconic score.

“The sets, the costumes, the dancing is so spectacular,” Corella asserts. He encourages everyone to experience this holiday gem, emphasizing that “The Nutcracker” is a tradition not to be missed. The production runs through December 31 at the Academy of Music, located at 240 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102.
