UPDATE: A magnitude 3.6 earthquake shook the area near Fillmore on Saturday at 5 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Fortunately, the quake, located approximately 8 miles northwest of Fillmore and at a depth of 7 miles, is not expected to have caused any significant damage.
Authorities confirmed that the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station has not received any reports of damage or injury in the region. Deputy Nicholas Hoslet stated, “We haven’t had any calls related to the earthquake.” This minor seismic event is classified as low-risk, as a moderate earthquake would typically reach a magnitude of 5.3 or higher.
“The seismic activity was felt but did not result in any emergencies,” Hoslet added.
Residents in the vicinity of the Sespe Condor Sanctuary reported feeling the tremor but were largely unaffected. Tremors of this magnitude are common, and while they can be startling, they usually do not pose a threat to safety or property.
As of now, the USGS continues to monitor the situation. They encourage residents to remain calm and prepared, as aftershocks can occur. For those living in earthquake-prone areas, it’s vital to have a safety plan in place.
