Born on May 22, 1927, in Dickinson, North Dakota, to Irma and Constant Klonecky, he left a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues throughout his career.
Educational Career and Contributions
Dr. Klonecky earned his Bachelor’s degree from Dickinson State University, where he began teaching English and Drama. His journey in education took a significant turn in 1955 when he relocated to Torrance, California, to teach English at North High School. He later pursued advanced studies, earning a Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California (USC).
Over a distinguished 25-year career at Torrance High School, he served as both Assistant Principal and Principal, retiring in 1987. Under his leadership, the school flourished, and he became well-loved by students, faculty, and parents alike. Even at the age of 98, Dr. Klonecky remained active within the community, engaging with retirees from Torrance High School and continuing his passion for education.
Personal Life and Legacy
Beyond his professional achievements, Harold Klonecky was known for his love of life. He enjoyed golfing and had a particular fondness for mystery novels. Renowned as an accomplished dancer, he was a sought-after partner at social events, where his kindness and patience shone through, endearing him to many.
He is survived by his family, including Theresa and Jeff Heiney and their son, Erick; Jen and Patrick Sullivan and their children Kieran, Aidan, Declan, and Bridget. He was predeceased by his son, Christopher Klonecky.
A celebration of Dr. Klonecky’s life will take place on December 15, 2025, at a Visitation and Rosary from 16:00 to 20:00 at Coastal Funeral Center, located at 25001 Narbonne Avenue, Lomita. A Funeral Mass will be held the following day, December 16, 2025, at 10:00 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, situated at 25511 Eshelman Avenue, Lomita. Friends and family are invited to join for a reception following the Mass at Hof’s Hut, located at 23635 Crenshaw Boulevard in Torrance at 11:30.
Dr. Klonecky’s legacy as an educator and a compassionate individual will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
