Vancouver Councillor Urges Reopening of Chinatown Post Office

UPDATE: Vancouver City Councillor Pete Fry has just announced a motion aimed at reopening the vital Chinatown post office, which was closed by Canada Post in November 2023. This urgent move is driven by growing concerns from residents, particularly seniors and those with disabilities, who are struggling to access essential mail services.

Fry’s motion, introduced earlier today, is a direct response to the challenges faced by Chinatown’s elderly population. “Residents of Chinatown in the Downtown Eastside, older people, people with disabilities, people who might not have the means to travel several kilometres to pick up their mail,” Fry stated, highlighting the community’s pressing needs.

The Main Street post office closure was part of reported cost-saving measures by Canada Post. “This was a business decision from Canada Post,” Fry noted, but he insists that the impact on the community is unacceptable. “It’s too late for that particular location and franchisee, but there’s a lot of opportunity within Chinatown,” he added.

Fry is calling upon Mayor Ken Sim to reach out to federal officials, proposing the use of city-owned properties in Chinatown for a new post office location. “We have properties in Chinatown that are owned by the City of Vancouver that we’re actively looking to redevelop,” Fry explained, aiming to find a solution that meets the community’s needs.

The emotional weight of this issue is clear. Many seniors in Chinatown do not use electronic banking and lack reliable internet access, making traditional mail services crucial. Fry emphasized, “there’s also a culturally appropriate lens to apply here too, where many of the seniors don’t necessarily speak English as their first language, may have some language barriers.” The reopening of the post office would not just provide a service; it would restore a sense of community and accessibility.

The Vancouver City Council is set to debate this critical motion on Wednesday, and the outcome could significantly impact residents in one of the city’s most vibrant yet vulnerable neighborhoods. As the situation develops, the community is closely watching for updates and hoping for a swift resolution.
