El Paso Community College (EPCC) is celebrating the graduation of Alba Lucía Quintero García, a 22-year-old international student from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, who is earning her Associate of Arts in Dance. Alba’s journey exemplifies perseverance as she navigated the challenges of studying abroad and emerged as a prominent figure among her peers.
Alba’s passion for dance began as a unique solution to her childhood hyperactivity. Over the years, this interest evolved into a lifelong commitment. In an interview with EPCC News, she shared, “Dancing means that no matter where I am, I will always have that comfort with me.”
Dedication and Leadership
Her time at EPCC has not been without challenges. Alba commutes across the border twice a week for early morning cheer practices at 6:00 a.m., showcasing her unwavering dedication. Beyond her studies, Alba has taken on leadership roles, including serving as president of the Dance Club and participating in the Speech and Debate Team. This involvement has allowed her to enhance her English and public speaking skills, culminating in competitions as far away as San Diego, California.
Leonor Forrestal, assistant coach of the EPCC Spirit Squad, praised Alba’s remarkable qualities, stating, “Alba’s resilience, passion for performance, and exceptional work ethic make her a standout student and a true highlight of our program.” Despite the grueling schedule and academic demands, Alba views her experiences in the region positively. She remarked, “At first it was really hard, but in the end, you discover the magic of the border. You realize El Paso and Juárez are really one big city.”
The Role of Family
Family support has been a cornerstone of Alba’s success, particularly the encouragement she receives from her mother. This backing has been vital throughout her educational journey. Looking ahead, Alba plans to continue her studies at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), aspiring to obtain a master’s degree and pursue a career in teaching dance.
As she prepares for this next chapter, Alba Lucía Quintero García stands as a testament to the power of determination and the importance of community support. Her story is an inspiring reminder of the impact of education and the arts on individuals’ lives.
