Goodspeed’s ‘White Christmas’ Delights Audiences Through Dec. 31

The Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Connecticut, is captivating audiences with its production of ‘White Christmas’, which has been extended through December 31, 2023. This Christmas-themed musical, featuring songs by the legendary Irving Berlin, offers a blend of romance and nostalgia, revitalizing the classic story originally told in the 1954 film starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.

Familiar Faces and Energetic Performances

The stage adaptation, crafted by playwright David Ives and producer Paul Blake, brings a mix of beloved Berlin songs alongside a few notable additions. The narrative unfolds in 1944, following two male entertainers, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, as they navigate budding romances with the Haynes Sisters, Betty and Judy, while attempting to save a struggling Vermont inn.

Omar Lopez-Cepero plays Bob Wallace, showcasing a different style compared to his previous performances at Goodspeed. His partner, Phil Davis, is portrayed by Clyde Alves, who previously appeared in ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’. Both actors deliver standout performances, highlighted by showstoppers that include a heartfelt rendition of ‘Blue Skies’.

The ensemble cast includes notable talents such as Lauren Nicole Chapman as Betty Haynes, whose exceptional singing elevates the production. Jonalyn Saxer, as Judy Haynes, brings flair and energy to her dance sequences, effectively capturing the spirit of the musical.

A Blend of Nostalgia and Entertainment

While the show is centered around the dual themes of romance and holiday spirit, it often leans towards a celebration of old-school vaudeville routines and musical numbers. The plot primarily revolves around the efforts to save the inn—a task complicated by a lack of snow and the couples’ romantic entanglements. This focus on character interactions and comedic moments sometimes overshadows the traditional Christmas atmosphere.

Despite a shaky start, characterized by an uneven tone and pacing, the production finds its rhythm as the story progresses. Direction by Hunter Foster keeps the action engaging, while Kelli Barclay’s choreography reignites the lively dance numbers that have become a hallmark of Goodspeed’s productions. Music direction by Adam Souza adds a vibrant swing to the familiar Berlin tunes, enhancing the overall experience.

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” is not only a celebration of the holiday season but also a testament to the enduring charm of musical theater. With its dynamic performances and lively choreography, the show appeals to both long-time fans of the genre and newcomers alike. Audiences can expect a delightful mix of nostalgia, humor, and heartwarming moments in this wintertime treat.
