Trump Hosts Kennedy Center Honors Gala Celebrating Icons

The annual Kennedy Center Honors gala is set to take place on December 3, 2023, featuring notable figures such as Sylvester Stallone, Gloria Gaynor, and the rock band Kiss. This year’s ceremony marks a significant departure from tradition, as former President Donald Trump will host the event, making him the first president to take the stage instead of observing from the audience.

Trump, who returned to office in January, has positioned the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as a focal point in his critique of what he terms “woke” anti-American culture. In August, he confirmed his role as host of the gala, stating, “This will be the highest-rated show that they’ve ever done,” during a recent State Department dinner for the honorees. The event will broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+, with Trump predicting record ratings for the ceremony.

Historically, the Kennedy Center Honors have celebrated individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts and culture, with past honorees including luminaries from various fields, such as dance, theater, and music. This year’s lineup includes not only Stallone, recognized for his iconic roles in the “Rocky” and “Rambo” franchises, and Gaynor, famed for her anthem “I Will Survive,” but also the theatrical prowess of George Strait and Michael Crawford.

The ceremony is expected to carry a poignant tone for the members of Kiss, as they mourn the loss of their original lead guitarist, Ace Frehley, who died in October following an accident.

Trump’s Relationship with the Kennedy Center

Trump’s association with the Kennedy Center has been contentious. After taking office, he reshaped its leadership, appointing supporters to the board of trustees and assuming the role of chair himself. His tenure has been marked by sharp criticisms of the center’s programming and aesthetic, even jokingly suggesting a name change to the “Trump Kennedy Center.” Additionally, he secured over $250 million in funding from Congress for renovations.

Presidents have historically engaged with artists who hold opposing political views. For instance, Ronald Reagan honored playwright Arthur Miller, a known advocate for liberal causes, while Bill Clinton celebrated Charlton Heston, an actor aligned with gun rights. During Trump’s first term, several honorees publicly criticized him, leading to his absence from the ceremony. Notably, in 2017, honoree Norman Lear threatened to boycott the event if Trump attended.

Trump has claimed to have played a significant role in selecting the 2025 honorees, reportedly rejecting some candidates deemed “too woke.” Stallone has emerged as a supporter, likening Trump to George Washington. In contrast, the political affiliations of other honorees remain less clear. While Gaynor has contributed to Republican causes, members of Kiss have expressed varied opinions about Trump. Gene Simmons initially endorsed Trump but later criticized him for fostering conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, Paul Stanley expressed disapproval of Trump’s attempts to contest the 2020 election results.

Trump’s hosting of the Kennedy Center Honors not only reflects his complex relationship with the arts community but also highlights the ongoing political divides within the realm of American culture.
