Santa Clarita Kicks Off Holidays with Urgent Tree Lighting at The Cube

UPDATE: The City of Santa Clarita ignited the holiday spirit on December 5, 2025, with an electrifying tree lighting ceremony at The Cube Ice and Entertainment Center. Mayor Bill Miranda took center stage, using a hockey stick to launch a glowing puck that illuminated a towering Christmas tree, captivating a crowd of families and community members.

The event marked the city’s fifth annual tree lighting, featuring live performances, special guests, and an open ice-skating session that drew a full house. “I didn’t think they would turn off the lights!” Miranda exclaimed, thrilled by the success of the event.

This celebration not only heralded the festive season but also commemorated the community’s effort to save The Cube, a vital recreational hub. After facing closure in March 2020, local supporters rallied to keep the facility operational. The city acquired the 93,000-square-foot venue for $14.95 million, recognizing its importance as the second most utilized facility in the Santa Clarita Valley.

“More people use The Cube than almost any other facility in the city,” Miranda stated, underscoring the rink’s pivotal role in the community. The Cube now hosts various organizations, including the UCLA Men’s Hockey Team and SNAP Sports, which provides adaptive sports programs for individuals with special needs.

During the ceremony, attendees were treated to a special appearance by Daryl Evans, former NHL player and current L.A. Kings analyst, who served as master of ceremonies. The Los Angeles Kings’ mascot, Bailey the Lion, and other guests added to the festive atmosphere.

The excitement continued with an excerpt from the upcoming holiday ice skating show, “A Nutcracker Fantasy,” which premieres tonight at 7 p.m., with additional shows scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. Families flocked to the rink, some wobbling on their skates while others glided with ease around the illuminated tree.

As the city looks ahead, officials are planning upgrades for The Cube, including a new Zamboni and potential multipurpose facility enhancements.

“This is a destination for families,” Councilwoman Marsha McLean remarked, reflecting on the positive impact The Cube has had on the community. “People from all over the San Fernando Valley come to thank us for keeping this facility open for their kids.”

With the holiday season officially underway, the tree lighting at The Cube not only marks a festive tradition but also a testament to community resilience and unity. Families left with smiles, eager to make memories on the ice, while city officials celebrated their successful efforts to preserve a cherished community asset.
