UPDATE: Nazareth’s wrestling team delivered a stunning performance on their home turf, defeating Northampton 37-28 in an electrifying dual meet. Senior Elijah Simak and senior Brayden Zuercher played pivotal roles, bumping up two weight classes and securing crucial victories that propelled their team to victory.
In a bold strategy, Simak faced off against Northampton junior Joell Small, weighing in at a significant 40.5 pounds lighter. “I knew I had the speed on him,” Simak stated after his commanding 22-6 tech fall win at 215 pounds. His victory came just 3:21 into the match, igniting the crowd and giving Nazareth a 31-28 lead as they approached the final bout.
Zuercher, also stepping up two weight classes, proved just as formidable. He pinned Northampton senior Brandon McEntire in a swift 48 seconds, sealing the victory and showcasing the team’s depth and determination. “Anything we can do for the team, we’re all in,” Zuercher said, reflecting the team spirit that fueled their success.
Coach Dave Crowell expressed pride in his wrestlers’ willingness to step up: “It wasn’t like they were wrestling small guys for their weight classes, but those guys just accepted the challenges.” This mindset not only led to individual victories but also showcased the team’s resilience against a challenging opponent.
Despite forfeiting a match at 107 pounds due to a weight miss from Northampton freshman Benjamin Schoenberger, the Konkrete Kids fought back with several impressive performances. Notable wins included falls by sophomore Brayden Werich at 127 pounds and junior Gabe Ballard at 160 pounds, both securing victories in less than two minutes.
However, Northampton coach Joe Provini acknowledged the impact of the forfeit, stating, “Our guys are going to have to ask themselves what kind of season we want to have going forward.” The challenge now lies ahead for the Konkrete Kids as they prepare for their next match against Bethlehem Catholic on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
As for Nazareth, their victory enhances their record to 2-0 this season. With a determined mindset, Simak emphasized their goal: “We want to finish on top, finish with all of it on the mat.” The Blue Eagles are set to take on their next big rivalry against Easton in another eagerly anticipated duel on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The energy and intensity of this match have set the stage for an exciting wrestling season ahead, with both teams eager to prove their mettle. With the dual meet now behind them, all eyes will be on Nazareth and Northampton as they continue their respective journeys.
