UPDATE: Honolulu residents are bracing for heavy rainfall as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued urgent weather advisories for the island. Starting Saturday, typical trade wind showers will affect windward and mauka areas, driven by a dissipating front west of Kauai.
The NWS forecasts a gradual strengthening of southeasterly winds today, which will push rainfall towards the east and southeast slopes of the islands. While no significant moisture sources are expected, residents should prepare for pockets of enhanced rainfall through early next week.
Aviation alerts are in effect, warning of potential moderate turbulence and low-level wind shear affecting PHOG this afternoon. Despite generally favorable VFR conditions, pilots and passengers are advised to stay informed as conditions may change rapidly.
Meanwhile, mariners are urged to exercise caution due to a Small Craft Advisory currently in place for Maui County and Big Island waters. A moderate to large northwest swell is expected, leading to combined sea heights exceeding 10 feet. With surf conditions along northern and western shores potentially reaching dangerous levels, a High Surf Advisory may be issued as the northwest swell peaks.
Officials highlight that early morning high tides could lead to minor coastal flooding, especially as the east shore surf becomes choppier with strengthening trade winds later this week.
Despite these weather advisories, the NWS reports that critical fire weather conditions are unlikely, with relative humidity remaining near seasonal norms and wind speeds only increasing to moderate levels. While the risk of fire remains low, authorities are continuously monitoring the evolving weather patterns.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and prepare for possible disruptions in both marine and aviation activities. As conditions develop, the NWS will provide further updates on the situation.
