Local Donations Surge for Give-A-Christmas Campaign

The annual Give-A-Christmas campaign is gaining momentum, with contributions currently totaling $1,760 as of Wednesday morning. The campaign, which aims to raise $10,000 for the local Salvation Army, has seen generous donations from community members in Fayette County.

Sparkle the Christmas Star, the campaign’s mascot, emphasized the local impact of the funds raised. “It’s an honor to help our Salvation Army units. They do so much good for those who need a helping hand,” Sparkle stated. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Give-A-Christmas initiative, which was launched by the Herald-Standard to bolster support for the Salvation Army. Over the years, the campaign has successfully raised more than $1 million for the organization.

Donations will continue to be accepted until December 23, 2023, with the final amount reported in the Christmas Eve edition of the newspaper. Recent contributions have come from various individuals and organizations, showcasing a spirit of community giving. Notable donors include Ronald Gaydos, who shared a festive message from himself and his wife, Pat, and Barbara Hoferer, who dedicated her contribution in memory of loved ones who have passed away.

Other recent donations were made by the Juniata United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, honoring both current members and those who are no longer with the community. Colette M Freiberg contributed in memory of Gerald Grimes, Jim Duckworth, and several family members, while David and Kathie Voelker remembered Don and Sally Leaphart through their donation.

Community members wishing to support the Give-A-Christmas campaign can mail their contributions to Give-A-Christmas, c/o Herald-Standard, 8 E. Church St., Uniontown, PA, 15401. Checks should be made payable to Give-A-Christmas. Donations can also be delivered in person at the newspaper office from 09:00 to 16:00 on weekdays. Donors are encouraged to include personal notes that honor or memorialize loved ones or share holiday greetings.

As the campaign progresses, local support continues to play a vital role in ensuring that the Salvation Army can provide essential services to those in need within Fayette County. With the community coming together, there is hope that this year’s fundraising efforts will surpass previous years and bring even greater assistance to those who require a helping hand during the holiday season.
