URGENT UPDATE: The 69th annual Emmett Thompson Memorial Dad’s Club Basketball Tournament kicks off today at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz, running from December 7-9, 2023. This exciting high school basketball event features eight competitive teams, including last year’s champions, Valley Christian of San Jose, who clinched the title in 2024 with a decisive 74-52 victory over San Luis Obispo.
The tournament promises thrilling matchups starting at 3:30 p.m. today with Soquel facing Willow Glen. Following this, Central Catholic will battle Monterey at 5 p.m., San Luis Obispo will take on Los Gatos at 6:30 p.m., and Santa Cruz will meet Scotts Valley at 8 p.m. All eight participating teams have playoff experience, making this year’s tournament a must-watch.
Santa Cruz High features a young roster, with only one returning starter, Kaden Miritz. Coach Lawan Milhouse expressed optimism about the team’s potential despite the challenges, stating, “We’re super young. This season is gonna be very interesting.” The Cardinals are eager to kick off their season after facing a tough preseason schedule.
In addition to the boys’ tournament, Santa Cruz High is also hosting the sixth annual Jacob’s Heart Pediatric Cancer Shootout on Saturday, further emphasizing the community’s commitment to supporting pediatric cancer families. Coach Todd Trowbridge aims to raise $6,000 for this charity event, with admission set at $10. All proceeds will go directly to Jacob’s Heart.
The girls’ tournament will feature participation from all teams in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, highlighting the community’s support. Trowbridge shared, “Fighting cancer is more important than playing basketball,” reflecting the heartfelt mission behind the event. The Knights of Soquel are also participating, even amidst their own schedule conflicts, demonstrating a strong commitment to the cause.
Tomorrow’s schedule is packed with more action, with consolation semifinals at 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., followed by semifinals at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.. The championship game is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, making it a crucial weekend for local teams.
