Governor Mifflin Fourth Graders Launch New Businesses Today!

UPDATE: Governor Mifflin fourth graders are stepping into the business world today, unveiling their mock enterprises during the highly anticipated annual business symposium at Brecknock Elementary School. The event, held on November 21, has transformed the school library into a vibrant marketplace known as “Sweet Read City,” showcasing the inventive spirit of these young entrepreneurs.

This year’s symposium features several mock businesses, including GMIS Care Cart and Mustang Keystone, designed to teach students invaluable lessons about the economy and entrepreneurship. “Experiences like the business symposium not only provide immersive, real-world learning but also nurture innovative, community-minded solutions,” said Rachel Sebastian, librarian at Brecknock and organizer of the event.

Throughout the project, which culminates today, students engaged with local businesses such as Classic Harley Davidson, East Penn Manufacturing, and Goodwill Industries. They learned about various career opportunities and the goods and services these companies offer, culminating in a series of exciting presentations and a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

The business symposium is not just a classroom activity; it’s part of a broader educational initiative called Total Experience Learning, which focuses on experiential learning. This framework is utilized by institutions like Alvernia University and emphasizes learning through direct interaction with real-world scenarios.

Students are excited to demonstrate their knowledge and creativity today, presenting their businesses that are modeled after actual enterprises in Berks County. The event features keynote speeches from the fourth graders, highlighting their projects and what they’ve learned about entrepreneurship.

Sebastian explained, “To take learning beyond the four walls of the classroom, students learn all about entrepreneurship from the business owners themselves.” The involvement of local business owners has been pivotal in shaping the students’ understanding and practical application of business concepts.

This year’s event is expected to draw a significant crowd, with parents, educators, and community members eager to witness the culmination of months of hard work and collaboration. The fourth graders’ efforts not only reflect their innovative thinking but also strengthen community ties, fostering a sense of responsibility and teamwork among the young participants.

As the ribbon-cutting ceremony approaches, excitement builds around the library, where students will officially launch their businesses and celebrate their accomplishments. The Governor Mifflin School District encourages everyone to support these young entrepreneurs and share in their success.
