URGENT UPDATE: The former Kenyon-Wanamingo Elementary School in Wanamingo, Minnesota, is set to transform into a much-needed daycare center, as local entrepreneur Ruthie Welvemoed unveils plans for the Golden Days & Little Rays Daycare and Activities Center. While the exact opening date is still pending, community demand is high, prompting swift action on the project.
The school district announced in January 2023 that the building would close due to declining enrollment and rising maintenance costs, including an aging roof. By May 2023, the district approved the sale of the property, paving the way for Welvemoed’s vision. “In our area, it’s such a need,” she stated, emphasizing the daycare’s importance for local families.
Once operational, the center will cater to 103 children, divided into age-appropriate groups for infants, toddlers, and school-aged kids. Care will be available before and after school, along with summer programming. “We’ve had a really great welcoming from the community about this idea,” Welvemoed noted, revealing that waiting lists are already forming.
Currently, the daycare is awaiting state licensing to proceed. Although the timeline is unclear, Welvemoed’s family, including her recently retired uncle from the roofing industry, is addressing necessary repairs, ensuring the building is ready for its new purpose.
